Why preparing properly pays off
The exam is closed book, so you have to know the rules, not look them up. And every failed attempt costs you time and money.
Wait after a fail
If you fail, you can retake the exam only after 21 calendar days, and you pay the re-examination fee again.
What happens after a fail →Deadline to pass
Your application is valid for 18 months from the day it is accepted. Miss it and you start over with a new application.
The whole licensing process →Closed-book exam
No reference materials are allowed. Multiple choice, four answers, one best answer. A calculator is provided.

What the exam covers
The official outline has seven sections. We weight practice the same way, so you spend your time where the points are.

How it works
Three steps from “where do I even start” to exam-ready.
Find your weak spots
The free test scores you in each of the seven sections, so you know what to study first.
Practice by section
Every answer comes with a short explanation and the exact law or publication it is based on.
Take full mock exams
Timed practice exams weighted like the real one, plus a readiness score that tells you when to book.
Built for busy contractors
Study on your phone between jobs, in the language you think in.
English and Spanish
Study in either language and switch whenever you like. Legal terms are shown in both languages, so you recognize them on exam day.
Explanations, not just answers
Learn why an answer is right and what the common trap is, so similar questions don't catch you out.
Math made simple
Markup vs. margin, payroll and deadlines broken down step by step, with a calculator like the one at the test center.
Kept up to date
Questions are checked against current California law and updated when rules change.
Read the whole thing free, first
We wrote the guide we wanted when we started: every rule checked against CSLB's own publications, with the date it was last verified. No sign-up, no email, nothing to buy.

What you actually get for your money
1,590 questions is a number. What matters is whether the thing in front of you keeps teaching you something on the tenth evening, when you are tired and the exam is on Friday.
Rounds that skip what you already know
Every round starts with questions you have never seen, then the ones you got wrong, oldest first. Practice the same section ten times and you keep meeting new material instead of the same easy question.
Ten minutes or two hours, your call
Choose rounds of 10, 20 or 50 questions. A short one fits in a lunch break; a long one fits a quiet evening. Every answer comes with the explanation and the law it rests on.
A timed mock exam, built like the real one
115 questions, 3½ hours, sections weighted exactly as CSLB weights them. Close the tab by accident and your answers are still there when you come back.
Every mistake comes back to you
Questions you got wrong collect in one place and wait to be fixed. Your weakest sections are named on the dashboard, so you always know what to open next.
Work through one section at a time
Seven sections, each with its own share of the exam shown next to it. Weak on Public Works and fine on Safety? Spend your time where it changes your score.
A plan built from your exam date (180-day pass)
Tell it the day you sit the exam. It works backwards: which sections to cover and by when, when to take each timed mock, and what to leave for the last three days. It reads your real answers, so it stays honest rather than becoming a list of ticked boxes.
Your progress follows you
Answer twenty questions on your phone at lunch, open your laptop that evening and carry on where you stopped. Even a half-finished mock exam moves across. Sign in with your email and a six-digit code — there is no password to invent or lose.
Progress is saved as you answer, so closing the tab or losing signal costs you nothing.

Is this the official CSLB exam?
No. CA Contractor Exam is an independent study tool. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by the Contractors State License Board or PSI. To apply for a license and book the exam, use the official CSLB website.
Are these the real exam questions?
No, and anyone claiming to sell real exam questions should be avoided. Our questions are original. We write them from the official exam outline and public sources such as the Contractors State License Law, the California Labor Code, IRS Publication 15 and Cal/OSHA regulations.
Can I take the exam in Spanish?
Yes. CSLB offers the Law and Business exam and several trade exams in Spanish. Our practice material is available in both English and Spanish.
Does this cover my trade exam too?
Not yet. We start with the Law and Business exam, which most license applicants are required to take. Trade exams are planned next.
Are the questions up to date with current law?
Yes. Every question is written from the current statute, regulation or official publication, and each answer shows which one. California rules usually change on 1 January, so we review the affected questions every year and whenever CSLB updates the exam outline. The material is written for the exam itself, so for a real job on site always check the official source.
How ready are you right now?
